Types of cell division and different parts of mitosis

What are the types of cell division? Describe different parts of mitosis. 03,04,05
Describe prophase 1 of first mitotic cell division. 04

Cell division
Cell division is the process by which cell multiply themselves for growth and repair of tissues.
Cell division is characterized by the equal division of all cellular components to form two daughter cells that are identical in genetic composition to the original cell.

Types: There are two types of cell division.

Mitosis: is the cell division process that takes place in somatic cells.
Meiosis: is the cell division process that takes place in gonads to produce gametes.

Different parts of mitosis:
Mitosis can generally be divided into four phases, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase.
  •  Prophase – the first and longest stage of mitosis
Early prophase – chromatin threads condense into chromosomesn

  • Chromosomes are made up of two threads called chromatids
  • Chromatids are held together by the centromere
  • Centriole pairs separate from one another
  • The mitotic spindle forms

Late prophase – centrioles continue moving away from each other
 Nuclear membrane fragments

  •  Metaphase – the second stage of mitosis
  • Chromosomes cluster at the middle of the cell.
  • Centromeres are aligned along the equator.
events in various phases of mitosis

  •  Anaphase – the third and shortest stage of mitosis
  • Centromeres of chromosomes split.

  •  Telophase – begins as chromosomal movement stops
o       Chromosomes at opposite poles of the cell uncoil
o       Resume their thread-like extended-chromatin form
o        A new nuclear membrane forms
o       Cytokinesis – completes the division of the cell into two daughter cell
