FAMILY PLANNING

There is several definition of family planning. An Expert committee (1971) of the WHO defined family planning as “a way of thinking and living that is adopted voluntarily, upon the basis of knowledge, attitudes and responsible decisions by individuals and couples, in order to promote the health and welfare of the family group and thus contribute effectively to the social development of a country.

Another expert committee defined and described family planning as follows:
    "Family planning refers to practices that help individual or   couples to attain   certain objectives:
         To avoid unwanted births
         To bring about wanted births
         To regulate the intervals between pregnancies
         To control the time at which births occur in    relation to the     ages of the parent; and
         To determine the number of children in the family

Objectives of family planning:
                  To bring about wanted birth
                  To regulate the interval between pregnancy
                  To control the time at which births occur in relation to the ages of the parents.
                  To determine the number of children in the family
                  To reduce abortions
                  To improve the economic condition of the country and to eliminate poverty.
                  To improve the developmental activities of the country.

Contraception:
It means prevention of conception by methods other than abstinence from coitus.
Contraceptive:
The term contraceptive include all measures temporary or permanent designed to prevent pregnancy due to coital act.

An ideal contraceptive method should fulfill the following criteria:
    1) Widely acceptable.
    2) Inexpensive.
    3) Simple to use.
    4) Safe.
    5) Highly effective.
     6) Requiring minimal motivation         maintenance and supervision.
