To explain ‘knowledge of Pharmacopoeia increases the knowledge of Materia Medica’- first we need to know about Pharmacopoeia and Materia Medica.

 Pharmacopoeia  means the supreme authoritative book published by the authority of government of any country, which deals with the scientific facts and logical attitude of  the rules and regulations of standardization of drug substance, containing directions for collecting drug material from different sources, for preparing, preserving, compounding and combining of various drugs. Besides, it also contains-external applications, prescription writing, posology and monograph of drugs. It is officially published by the authority of government of any country or any medical or pharmaceutical society.

Materia Medica is the subject of medical science which deals with the study of source, preparation, and clinical application of medicine. It also contains medicinal  character and symptoms.

From the definition t is clear that one contains the rules and regulations of preparing, preserving medicines and another contains medicinal symptoms. So there is a keen and better relation between these. The knowledge of Pharmacopoeia improves the knowledge of Materia Medica, some rational reason are given below-

1~Drug  proving::

The constitutional principle of pharmacy is noted in Pharmacopoeia. According these principle Homoeopathic medicines are prepared. Then it is proved upon healthy human beings on different age and sex. Then their subjective and objective symptoms are exhibited. These symptoms are noted on Materia Medica.

2~Drug Introduction::

By Materia Medica we know about different drugs. On the other hand in Pharmacopoeia there has full description and chemical formula about this medicine. So by this way, it helps us to know very keenly about this medicine.

3~Drug strength::

From the study of Pharmacopoeia we know about drug strength of different medicine. It helps us to select the proper strength of drugs, which is the basic theory of Materia Medica.

4~Poisonous effect::

Pharmacopoeia contains about poisonous effect of medicine that helps physician to select proper medicine. It also an essential part of Materia Medica.

5~Drug preservation::

The knowledge of preservation we get from pharmacopoeia, it is a great fact for Materia Medica.

Finally, we can say that Pharmacopoeia and Materia Medica is related directly and indirectly. If there is no complete sense about one, another is incomplete. So it is true that, ‘knowledge of Pharmacopoeia increase the knowledge of Materia Medica’.
